Uruguay selects Gemalto for eID secure document and issuance solution
Uruguay ranked number one in Latin America in the 2014 United Nations eGovernment index
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Jan. 13, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE):
Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the world leader in digital security, will deliver its Sealys eID card and Coesys Issuance solution to the Ministry of Interior of Uruguay for the country's eID ("Documento de Identidad") program. Gemalto's instant issuance solution enables on-the-spot delivery of the highly secure document from more than 20 sites across the country. The microprocessor in the polycarbonate card provides strong user authentication and digital signature for the country's comprehensive suite of eGovernment services. It is ICAO-compliant, making it an official travel document within the Mercosur and associated countries. This new program reinforces the country's positioning at the forefront of innovation. Uruguay ranked number one in Latin America in the 2014 United Nations eGovernment index1.
Gemalto will provide consulting services all the way through the implementation, supporting the Ministry of Interior of Uruguay in on-boarding third parties such as banks, tax collection agencies or social security administrations to accelerate service adoption. The contract also includes maintenance and support services over five years.
"Our goal is to improve the official identity document and to boost usage of our eGovernment platform," said Eduardo Bonomi, Minister of Interior of Uruguay. "We also wanted to position ourselves at the forefront of innovation by implementing polycarbonate documents with contact and contactless microprocessors, including advanced digital signature and identity applications, as well as Match-on-Card technology. In addition, we will meet ICAO's requirements to all electronic travel documents with on-the-spot delivery of the new, highly secure eID card to our citizens."
"Online services in Uruguay increased 55% from 2012-14 and the country is also recognized for the high quality of its third level education in the areas of technology and computing1," added Jerome Desbois, Vice President of Government Programs for Latin America at Gemalto. "With this program, it becomes one of the first countries in Latin America to deploy an identity document that complies with the latest international security standards."
